Study English in Portsmouth

Nearly 200,000 inhabitants populate this cosmopolitan city which has all the attractions of a big city whilst also having the advantages of a small and welcoming place. It is a relatively small city with a wide and diverse selection of attractions. The best way to get around the city is on foot. The historical centre has many shops, bars and restaurants. In the port area, you can watch the fishing and leisure boats. 

It is one of the most interesting cities on the South coast of England; it offers a variety of tourist, cultural and recreation attractions such as: beaches, clubs, shopping centres, concert halls etc. 

The heritage 

Portsmouth has 11 fascinating museums that will tell you about the history. Visit the historic Dockyar and the Royal Marines Museum, and get to know Charles Dickens, the famous writer in the same place that he was born. 

Activities 

Spinnaker tower is a great place to start your visit, being 170m tall you will be able to see the whole city. You will be able to visit the port and if you dare, walk on the largest glass floor in Europe. 

Bars and restaurants 

Portsmouth has various award-winning restuarants and has two food festivals. There are markets where farmers in the area sell their products and establishments to sample the local food. 

Shopping

Portsmouth has many places to go shopping, with three main areas. The city centre has all of the well known brands. Enjoy an indoor shopping centre called Cascades and a street market that has been around for centuries. Southsea has an impressive selection of specialised shops, as well as two large warehouses. Or you can go to Gunwharf Quays and discover more than 95 designer brand outlets. 

Sport

In Fratton Park, you will be ale to see football matches. Every October, Portsmouth organises the Great South Run, a 16km road race.

Music and nightlife

A good option to see the Portsmouth groups is to visit Southsea concert hall, Wedgewood Rooms. Also, Gunwharf Quays has more than 30 bars and restaurants, the perfect place to enjoy your evenings.

What to do in Portsmouth

In Portsmouth school, they know that when learning English, it is necessary to practice it outside the classroom. 

An activity programme is organised. Here you have an example of the events that are usually organised in the afternoons and at night:

Staying in a family home is probably the best way to practice English and in general get to know the British way of life. 

We try very hard to ensure that the students are located within a 2km radius from the school, but it may be that some houses are a bit further from the school.

You will have your own key, so you can come in and leave when you want. You can reserve accommodation with half board (breakfast and dinner every day and full board at weekends), or reserve a bedroom without food (only for those older than 18). In this case, you will be able to use the kitchen to cook what you want. 

There is also availability for bedrooms with ensuite.

Residence

The residence is located in the city centre, and it has many bus connections. All of the bedrooms have ensuite. There is a reception with a receptionist and security service 24 hours a day. 

Each bedroom has a single bed, a wardrobe and a desk. It has central heating throughout the apartment and this can be controlled independently in each bedroom. Internet access is available throughout the building. The bedrooms are well ventilated and are very bright. 

A bedding packet is available by paying a single fee. There is an onsite laundry for washing and drying. 

The communal area is made up of a kitchen/dining room and living room. Pans, crockery and utensils are provided in the kitchen. The cleaning service of the common rooms is done by the landlord. The cleaning of each apartment is your responsibility.

How to get there

How to get to Portsmouth

The most important airports are Gatwick and Heathrow, both 60 miles (100km) from Portsmouth. Southampton International Airport is the closest airport to Portsmouth, and is just 22 miles away. 

From Gatwick airport: 

There is a direct train from the airport to Southsea, Portsmouth station. The journey takes one hour.

From Heathrow airport: 

There is a shuttle bus every 30 minutes and a train every 2 hours to Portsmouth and Southsea (approximately 70 minutes). There is also a direct bus from Heathrow to Portsmouth.

From Southampton Eastleigh airport

You can get a train from Southampton station to Portsmouth. There is a train every 2 hours.
